Polluting stormwater runoff from streets, roads, and parking lots can cause serious environmental and public health problems. Here are four types of stormwater pollution:

Urban Runoff: This form of pollution is caused by the combined rain, snowmelt, and street runoff that falls on roofs, driveways, and other impervious surfaces. Roadsides, parking lots, and other areas that collect rainwater also contribute to urban runoff.

Industrial Stormwater: Polluting industrial stormwater runoff comes from manufacturing plants, chemical plants, and other sources that produce wastewater and chemicals. This runoff contains high levels of pollutants such as metals, minerals, oils, and grease.

Agricultural Stormwater: Agricultural runoff is often composed of water containing fertilizers, pesticides, and other chemicals used on crops. It can also contain pathogens such as E. coli or Salmonella that can be harmful to humans and wildlife.

Coastal Storm Surge: Rising seas due to climate change are causing more coastal flooding due to storm surge. Storm surge is the result of large waves created by a severe weather event that come ashore along a coastline.
