All types of asbestos can be divided into two broad categories. These are the two main categories.

a) Serpentine group:

b) Amphibole group

This type is the most dangerous. Straight fibers are its main characteristic. It is not like the serpentine group. Instead, it has a chain-like structure. The amphibole group contains five types of asbestos.

1. Chrysolite

Chrysolite, also known as white asbestos is the most popular type of asbestos. It is part of the serpentine group. This type of asbestos is used extensively in the construction industry. 

2. Amosite

This is an amphibole type of asbestos. This fiber is very stiff and strong. These fibers are easily attracted to the air and can be inhaled via the nose or mouth. This is also known as brown asbestos. It is used mainly for insulation purposes. 

3. Crocidolite

This rare form of asbestos belongs to the amphibole group. Because it is extremely strong, it is used mainly to reinforce plastics. It has a slight blue color. It can also be used for thermal insulation.

The three other types of asbestos, which aren't used in commercial products, do not cause any harm.
